You are adding your interpretation of this scripture to say it means "all foods are clean". You would have to ignore lots of scripture to add that interpretation.

When Jews said that gentiles were unclean, God gave a dream that explained that Paul was not to consider them unclean, and he used unclean food to make the point. Scripture goes on to explain that it wasn't about the food, it was about the gentiles. We would have to ignore the explanation of this that is scripture in order to say that all scripture saying food from animals who ate unclean things did not symbolize of unclean thoughts.

New Testament scripture was directed to a time when the teaching most needed was not to make actions without understanding the spirit and truth those actions were to result from the focus of our God. When this is taken to the other extreme as we are doing that spirit and truth and actions are completely separate, we are making an untruth also. We will be judged by what we do.
gee whiz. All I did was give two translations of the same passage and you accuse me of giving ''my interpretation''? Methinks you need to slow down and read what actually is written.

Redtent,
It was Peter that God gave the dream to and not Paul :D

I know you probably meant Peter

1Ti 4:5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
Means by the word of God as..

Mark 7:18-19 He said to them, “Are you so foolish? Don’t you understand that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him?
For it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and then goes out into the sewer.” (This means all foods are clean.)

and prayer...giving thanks.

Has nothing to do with Jewish ordinances in Leviticus.
The Levitical priesthood and it's rites no longer apply.

Hebrews 7:11-12 So if perfection had in fact been possible through the Levitical priesthood – for on that basis the people received the law – what further need would there have been for another priest to arise, said to be in the order of Melchizedek and not in Aaron’s order?
For when the priesthood changes, a change in the law must come as well.
When you go on about how Leviticus, or what God taught before Christ's resurrection does not apply to us at all, it is such a denial of scripture, of God, of even what Christ means to us. We are told we are to learn from all scripture. Scripture tells us what Christ changed, what he replaced, and how Christ built from what was told before, we are to learn from scripture. Your denial of scripture is such a hurtful thing to do!

I get why you do it, but it has to be stated it is not mandatory that you do or don't, or a sin if you do or don't.

I do agree that you will be in much better condition by following it.

This is why understanding the Biblical covenants and understanding they are for today is important and not get all up in arms over the dietary laws or allow yourself to be deluded by replacement theology.

So I have to ask, why follow only the Mosaic dietary laws? why not the Edenic diet, which pre-dates the Mosaic laws
I'm a Christian, and its written in God's word. God said to do it. That's why I follow it. It's Not really complicated. I'm not in the habit of questioning why I should or should-not follow what God said. I just do it the best I can.

Ok here is a list of foods we can and can't eat. If God don't want us to eat certain foods that He Hates? then why are we selling these certain foods in food markets and retail?

Deuteronomy 14: 3-21.

[SUP]3 [/SUP]Don’t eat anything the Lord hates. [SUP]
4 [/SUP]Here are the only animals you can eat. You can eat oxen, sheep, goats, [SUP]
5 [/SUP]deer, gazelles, roe deer, wild goats, ibexes, antelope and mountain sheep.
[SUP]6 [/SUP]You can eat any animal that has hoofs that are separated completely in two. But it must also chew the cud.
[SUP]7 [/SUP]Some animals only chew the cud. Others only have hoofs that are completely separated in two. The camel, rabbit and rock badger chew the cud, but they don’t have hoofs that are completely separated. So you can’t eat them. They are not “clean” for you.
[SUP]8 [/SUP]Pigs aren’t “clean” for you either. They have hoofs that are completely separated, but they don’t chew the cud. So don’t eat their meat. And don’t touch their dead bodies.
[SUP]9 [/SUP]Many creatures live in water. You can eat all of the ones that have fins and scales. [SUP]
10 [/SUP]But don’t eat anything that doesn’t have fins and scales. It isn’t “clean” for you.
[SUP]11 [/SUP]You can eat any “clean” bird. [SUP]
12 [/SUP]But there are many birds you can’t eat. They include eagles, vultures, and black vultures. [SUP]
13 [/SUP]They include red kites, black kites and all kinds of falcons. [SUP]
14 [/SUP]They include all kinds of ravens. [SUP]
15 [/SUP]They include horned owls, screech owls, gulls and all kinds of hawks. [SUP]
16 [/SUP]They include little owls, great owls, white owls [SUP]
17 [/SUP]and desert owls. They include ospreys and cormorants. [SUP]
18 [/SUP]They include storks and all kinds of herons. They also include hoopoes and bats.
[SUP]19 [/SUP]All insects that fly together in groups are “unclean” for you. So don’t eat them.
[SUP]20 [/SUP]But you can eat any creature that has wings and is “clean.”
[SUP]21 [/SUP]If you find something that’s already dead, don’t eat it. You can give it to an outsider who is living in any of your towns. He can eat it. Or you can sell it to someone who is from another country. But you are a holy nation. The Lord your God has set you apart for himself.

Don’t cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.

Too sum it up in a few words. All creation is good but not all creation is good to eat. In otherwords everything has it's purpose and some animals were created for purposes for other than your consumption.

As you can see some creatures do certain things, take for example the christians favorite food, pig. It eats that vile product called waste, carrion, and a multitude of other things people want to dispose of. The crab is another, having worked search and rescue its usually the first thing to come crawling out of a deceased persons eye socket. After seeing that, commandment or no commandment I would think anyone in their right mind would never again want to eat a crab.

But then there are creatures on the list which seem not to clean up waste product and no reason is given. One thing is certain the Creator said, don't eat them, which for me is a satisfactory reason not too. Because who better than the Creator to know whats good and not good for food.

Nevertheless I do wonder about those that made the list of prohibited species to eat yet don't appear to clean up waste product. It may be the Creator has a special place in His heart for these animals and he sees in them something we don't. I think of my dogs, though considered unclean we permitted to touch them and handle them. I consider them a part of my family, fierce protector, friend and companion, I see in them something you may not. Yet if anyone dared take one of my dogs, butcher it before my eyes, cooked it and ate it right before me all the while telling me he didn't care about my will and that he lived by grace alone. I can assure you that person will feel my wrath.

Hey phil112. Were that scripture taken from? and plus, why do we need to ask God to bless our food, if its cleaned already? Thank him yes, but why ask God to bless if its cleansed already?
We should thank God for everything. Without Him we can do/are nothing. He provides us with our very breath. He provides us with an environment that allows us to flourish and prosper.

Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. [SUP] [/SUP]For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
There are those that will lie to you and tell you it doesn't pertain to food. Nothing could be more in error. Scripture is very clear about it. The old testament law is passe. Welcome to the new covenant that was purchased for us by the blood of Christ.

If you want to know where I get scripture, just copy and paste it to a KJV search engine. Sometimes it gets wearisome seeing verse after verse after verse pasted. Most of the time the part that specifically addresses what we want is sufficient.

Those two passages are so good for us to consider, what I was saying is that I don't think it agrees with scripture to say that these two passages means that all foods are clean. Scripture points to that foods from animals who eat garage as their food symbolizes uncleanliness for us. It wasn't the scripture I was addressing, the addition of "it means all foods are clean". Maybe we both have a point?

Doesn't matter "what you think", God has cleansed it for us, and we are not to call it unclean. Climb out of that musty closet of old testament law you live in and join the new covenant dispensation.

Ok, that's your interpretation. The verses I gave cleary stated...''thus declaring all foods clean''. That was Mark's commentary on the matter. I think I'll go with His Scripture.

The vision of Peter is given in Acts 10
The vision had to do with eating WITH GENTILES, which is explained in the subsequent chapters. Jesus addressed the issues of actually eating, however, when asked why his disciples ate with unwashed hands (ritual hand washing had been added to their dietary laws)
[SUP]Matthew 10:16 [/SUP]And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?

[SUP]17 [/SUP]Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?

[SUP]18 [/SUP]But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

[SUP]19 [/SUP]For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

[SUP]20 [/SUP]These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

It would go to show that if it's not what goes into your belly, it shouldn't matter if it's cow or pig, whether it was sacrificed to an idol, or whether it was cooked over dung; however if you are eating bacon with an attitude of rebellion, watch that you don't get an intestinal parasite. Not saying you'll lose your salvation, but you may have a killer tummy ache.

We do not need to ask God to bless our food (although there's no real harm in asking for all the blessings in the world on any and every thing you like, as long as it's not a graven image or something). This is a perversion by the RCC, who added a bunch of rules to the commandments, in spite of the Lord specifically stating not to do that.

They changed the Sabbath to Sunday, they changed the blessing from after meals to before, and other things. These things are very harmful as they negate the point, or spirit, of the commands. Scripture says not to forget God when sated with food, in Deuteronomy 6:10
[SUP]10 [/SUP]And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,

[SUP]11 [/SUP]And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;
[SUP]12 [/SUP]Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

God has already blessed the food by giving it to you. If he hadn't you would not have food at all. He knows it will nourish your bodies, that's why he gave it to you.

But lets read the beginning of the 15th chapter of Matthew, and see what Jesus said about man changing the rules around.

15 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

[SUP]2 [/SUP]Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

[SUP]3 [/SUP]But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

[SUP]4 [/SUP]For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

[SUP]5 [/SUP]But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

[SUP]6 [/SUP]And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

[SUP]7 [/SUP]Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,

[SUP]8 [/SUP]This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

[SUP]9 [/SUP]But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

I pray that God would touch the hearts of those who are struggling with the law, that they would see the spirit of the law commands rejoicing, and is not meant as a burden but as a blessing. It is man's twisting of the law that encumbers.

How you and I look at what God told us in the OT is different. When I read Hebrews it tells me that Christ built on what was, Christ made it complete. I read Hebrews as if it is talking to someone who thoroughly knew and believed in all God explained about all God is in the OT, and being told how Christ made everything better. It is a big difference between reading it as to wipe out what was and Christ made it completely new.

It is also looking at scripture from a different viewpoint. I am seeing it as a unit, as from One God, with every single verse fitting together with every other verse. If something is scripture in the year 3,000 BC, I see it as scripture in 2,000 AD. So nothing takes precedence, it is all one. It is just a matter of seeing how it fits together.

How does verse 19 apply to John the baptist? Don't locust travel in big packs just wondering ?

Mark 1:6 And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

You are adding your interpretation of this scripture to say it means "all foods are clean". You would have to ignore lots of scripture to add that interpretation.
it's not crossnote's interpretation, its the interpretation the apostles had, writing by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit:
"Thus he declared all foods clean." (Mark 7:19, ESV)

but what did Christ himself say, notwithstanding Peter's vision?
it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.
(Matthew 15:11)

is Christ only talking about washing your hands before you eat? read on:

But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.
For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.
These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.

(Matthew 15:18-20)

the commandments to the Israelites concerning food have been deeply studied and many essays written about them showing that the diet kept them from many common diseases. the law is good, and not just for ritual or spiritual interpretation but also for health. you can't ignore Peter's vision or Christ's teachings though, or Paul's clear teaching not to condemn over what they do or do not eat.

there's probably nutritional worth in eating kosher, and doing it as a devotion to God is good. but it's wrong to take it up like it's a law for us under the covenant God has made with us through Jesus, or to condemn anyone for eating a hot dog.

do we also need to sew blue tassels onto all our clothes?
Speak to the people of Israel, and tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner.
(Numbers 15:38)

For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.
(James 2:10)

And to think I thought this post was going to be about something about how to live and eat today, not about something that was settled two thousand years ago.

People, look at what you are eating.

1. Processed foods
Basically poison that is high in carbs, sugar and chemicals. And just in case you think sugar is natural, unless you are eating foods with cane sugar, all sugar contains GMO's today.

Some of the many additives included in processed foods are thought to have the ability to compromise the body's structure and function and are suggested to be related to the development of skin, pulmonary and psycho-behavioral conditions. Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) are currently being investigated for their potential to damage genetic material and therefore promote cancer. Sulfites have been found to aggravate asthma (hypertext) in certain children and adults. Artificial colorings have been noted to cause hypersensitivity reactions in sensitive persons promoting conditions such as ADHD (attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder), asthma and skin conditions such as urticaria and atopic dermatitis. Therefore, avoiding foods that contain these and other chemical additives may greatly contribute to health.

What are the problems with processed foods?

2. GMO foods - huge topic!

Potential Health Hazards of Genetically Engineered Foods | Global Research

Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are any living thing that has had its genetic material altered in some way through human scientific interference. This does not refer to “selective breeding,” such as when certain crops are selectively bred by gardeners over time to withstand heat, for instance, or the process by which different dog breeds were developed over time. Instead, GMOs undergo a form of gene therapy under lab conditions whereby segments of DNA are spliced, rearranged or removed altogether. You may have been eating genetically modified food for years and not even know it.
In the United States, much of the corn and soybeans produced (especially those to be fed to livestock or to provide filler material in processed foods at the supermarket) contain some portion of genetically modified material. From cereal and crackers to baking mixes, veggie burgers, and even milk and cheese, GMOs have infiltrated our grocery aisles largely without much study into their long-term health effects on our bodies. However, The Environmental Working Group conservatively estimates that each American consumes about 190 pounds of GM foods every year despite this lack of research. Choosy consumers are worried — and getting mad and organized — about these potential health impacts.
Read more: 4 Potential Health Risks of Eating GMO Foods - Care2 Healthy Living | Care2 Healthy Living

3. Red meat Cancer risk!
PCRM | The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
Does eating red meat increase the risk of cancer and heart disease?
A: For heart disease, the answer is pretty clear. Some red meats are high in saturated fat, which raises blood cholesterol. High levels of LDL cholesterol increase the risk of heart disease.
When it comes to cancer, the answer is not so clear. Many researchers say it does raise the risk, especially for colorectal cancer.
A recent National Institutes of Health-AARP study of more than a half-million older Americans concluded that people who ate the most red meat and processed meat over a 10-year-period were likely to die sooner than those who ate smaller amounts. Those who ate about 4 ounces of red meat a day were more likely to die of cancer or heart disease than those who ate the least, about a half-ounce a day. Epidemiologists classified the increased risk as “modest” in the study.
The meat industry contends there is no link between red meat, processed meats, and cancer, and says that lean red meat fits into a heart-healthy diet. A meat industry spokeswoman criticized the design of the NIH-AARP study, saying that studies that rely on participants to recall what foods they eat cannot prove cause and effect. “Many of these suggestions could be nothing more than statistical noise,” says Janet Riley, a senior vice president of the American Meat Institute, a trade group.
But many studies have found similar links. Another one that followed more than 72,000 women for 18 years found that those who ate a Western-style diet high in red and processed meats, desserts, refined grains, and French fries had an increased risk of heart disease, cancer, and death from other causes.
“The association between consumption of red and processed meats and cancer, particularly colorectal cancer, is very consistent,” says Marji McCullough, PhD, a nutritional epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society.
After a systemic review of scientific studies, an expert panel of the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research concluded in 2007 that “red or processed meats are convincing or probable sources of some cancers.” Their report says evidence is convincing for a link between red meat, processed meat, and colorectal cancer, and limited but suggestive for links to lung, esophageal, stomach, pancreatic, and endometrial cancers.
Rashmi Sinha, PhD, the lead author of the National Cancer Institute study, points to a large number of studies that link red meat consumption with chronic diseases.

4. Pesticides, Herbicides and Hormones in food

Pesticides in produce, hormones in milk, antibiotics in meat -- what are all these extra ingredients doing in our food?
Improved testing methods now allow researchers to detect and monitor a strange brew of unpleasant chemicals in our food and bodies. Although the amounts are small and there’s controversy about whether or not they’re harmful, their presence alone is disturbing to many --especially parents of small children.
“Modern production of foods incorporates a wide range of synthetic chemicals,” says Jeff Gillman, PhD, associate professor of horticulture at the University of Minnesota and author of The Truth About Organic Gardening. “Many of these chemicals have the potential to be very damaging to humans if they are exposed to high concentrations, or to low concentrations over an extended period of time.”
“More people are realizing there’s a myriad of chemicals in conventionally produced food,” says Craig Minowa, environmental scientist with the Organic Consumers Association, a nonprofit advocacy group. Although each has passed its own safety review, Minowa points out that “most of the studies on safety are done or supported by the companies themselves.”
So what are the health effects of these unwanted ingredients?

[h=3]Pickles, Lettuce, Mayo … Hold the Estrogen[/h]Injecting hormones into young livestock can make them gain weight faster. More weight means more meat, which means more profit for the producer. Hormones also increase the production of milk by dairy cows.
Hormones have been used for decades in the meat and dairy industries. Synthetic estrogens and testosterone are the most common. Typically, farmers implant a pellet in a cow’s ear at an early age; it releases hormones throughout the animal’s life.
Initial concerns about estrogen-injected cows centered on a compound called diethylstilbestrol (DES). Nearly all beef cattle were treated with DES in the 1950s and 1960s. DES was also used as medicine, given to pregnant women to prevent miscarriages.
However, it was also discovered that DES caused a higher risk of vaginal cancer in the daughters of women who received the medicine. By the 1970s, over the protests of ranchers, diethylstilbestrol was phased out from use in medicine and agriculture.
It’s also long been known that breast cancer risk increases with higher lifetime exposure to estrogen. These facts have led many to question whether the continued use of synthetic estrogens in livestock is safe.
Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) is a different class of hormone that increases the amount of milk dairy cows produce. Some suggest that although rBGH itself appears safe, it increases the amount of other chemicals in the body that might cause cancer. So far, there’s no definitive proof one way or the other.
How much hormone is in a hamburger, and could it hurt you? The answer is, no one really knows. Studies show the added hormones do show up in beef and milk, pushing their estrogen and testosterone content to the high end of normal for cows. Whether that translates to increased risk for humans is the question.

5. Fatty liver disease - caused by prescription drugs, obesity and the kind of foods you eat.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) is the accumulation of abnormal amounts of fat within the liver.

NAFLD is important for several reasons. First, it is a common disease, affecting approximately 30% of the population and is increasing in prevalence. Second, NASH is an important cause of serious liver disease, leading to cirrhosis and the complications of cirrhosis--liver failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, and liver cancer. Third, NAFLD is associated with other very common and serious non-liver diseases, perhaps the most important being cardiovascular disease that leads to heart diseaseand strokes. Fatty liver probably is not the cause of these other diseases, but is a manifestation of an underlying cause that the diseases share. Fatty liver, therefore, is a clue to the presence of these other serious diseases which need to be addressed.

Fatty Liver Symptoms, Causes, Treatment - What are nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and steatohepatitis? - MedicineNet

As for Scripture, let's look at what the human body was created to eat.

"And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food." Gen. 1:29

As far as eating meat, God did give permission to eat meat after the flood.

"And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. [SUP]2 [/SUP]The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. [SUP]3 [/SUP]Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. [SUP]4 [/SUP]But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood." Gen. 9:1-4

However, that meat was likely wild or hand raised with grains and organic fodder. Not in a feed lot, then processed and chemicals added to maintain the colour, flavor etc.

We have a crisis of obesity and degenerative diseases which are caused in part by simply not eating food in as close to the forms God created them.

Stay away from chemicals, denatured foods (white flour & sugar etc), and pick organic and you will be a lot healthier. God did not intend for us to be obese, or eat fast food.

I think this is a much more important issue than rehashing clean foods and unclean foods one more time.

For that matter - how clean do you think the steroids they put in meat, the GMO's in plants and the chemicals to preserve almost all food that is sold in today's supper markets? God must be groaning at what his people eat!

Pickles, Lettuce, Mayo … Hold the Estrogen

Injecting hormones into young livestock can make them gain weight faster.

God must be groaning at what his people eat!

the law is good, and not just for ritual or spiritual interpretation but also for health. you can't ignore Peter's vision or Christ's teachings though, or Paul's clear teaching not to condemn over what they do or do not eat.

there's probably nutritional worth in eating kosher, and doing it as a devotion to God is good. but it's wrong to take it up like it's a law for us under the covenant God has made with us through Jesus, or to condemn anyone for eating a hot dog.

do we also need to sew blue tassels onto all our clothes?
Speak to the people of Israel, and tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner.
(Numbers 15:38)

For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.
(James 2:10)
You are making some good points. Especially that we are not to condemn anyone for how they choose to worship God.

However, I think James 2:10 is not telling us to ignore the law at all, or it is useless to try to keep it. James is saying that if you use the law for salvation it won't work, you need Christ.

I also think that when we listen to scripture telling us that we are not to use rituals ever as obedience to law, we are forgetting that God gave rituals as a reminder to people of the law they represent. It is taking a biblical instruction so far it becomes something that isn't true.

I was so impressed with a lady who wrote how hard it was to live a Christian life after she had lived as a Jew rejecting Christ. Every single thing she did, before, was connected to her God from the time she got up in the morning until she went to bed at night. When she added Christ, she was told to make nothing she did routinely relate to God. She could not understand why that should be from Christ.
