I believe it's a restoration process. Peter explained it will be purified with fire and that water will not exist afterwards. The real question is for what purpose is the earth being restored and purified?
In the story of Cain and Abel God tells Cain that Abel's blood is crying out from the earth. So we are learning that every wrong deed, action, sinful way the earth is inheriting and testifies like a report to God.
So after 6,000+ years of this constant condition being done by imaginatively the possible 20 billion people to ever live and then include the actions by Satan and his band of fallen angels + the demons we have an earth severely polluted with sin.
I believe the severity of sin evidence within and throughout the planet earth makes our planet appear as old as Science believes it to be. If sin causes humans to die by the very nature of sin just imagine what the planet is suffering of from everything created and sins is doing to it through inheritance. We are made from the dust of earth and return to earth just as our sins.
So this fire spoken by Peter is purifying earth. It's not really a new earth but restored back to it's original state of creation.

In likening the "beginning of sorrows" to birth pains, when a woman goes into labor, as the birthing progresses, the contractions increase in both intensity and frequency.
As we observe what we are seeing in our day and time, we see things happening with increasing rapidity ... as well as increasingly evil.

Hebrews talks about the heavens being folded up like a garment:
Hebrews 1:10-12 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.
Imagine God taking the whole of creation (which we cannot even comprehend the vastness ... not having reached the end with all our space exploration) ... and just folding it up like we fold a blanket. Amazing!

Knowing the gift given in the risen Son from Daddy, Father, PaPa one is not worried or arrogant over the gift given. New life in the risen Christ, and this is done through the new born new believers by God to all. Eph 2 covers this as well thanks to God, no one else at least this I am standing in Col 1:21-23 trusting God for all the rest to turn to God to believe God over it all.

And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
I always thought the verse God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie referred to the revealing of the wicked one ... with all the stuff going on these days, I believe the strong delusion has already started, is ripening, and ultimately some will welcome the wicked one with open arms.

There have been signs in the heavens as well, fireballs falling down strange orbs appearing in the sky apparent 8 ft. tall creatures appearing and other strange things
also earthquakes famine and the how love has grown cold even among family memeber that especially I can attest to
Basically everything Jesus said was going to happen is happening now we have to wonder how much more until people wake up and see the signs? will we repent or not? will we be ready for the harpazo or not?

The church, by and large, has sold their soul to politicians. Many pew-sitters support the killing of babies. Many others support war-mongers, liars and adulterers as their leaders.
