I was asked this question and I wasn't sure how to answer, besides the "that's what the Bible says" rebuttal. I'm not sure if there is a thread for this already. I know salvation is believing that Jesus died and resurrected, etc. and repenting but the question was :

Why do you have to believe in Jesus to be saved?
A related question is, “What is GRFS for those who have never heard of Jesus?” (which includes everyone living B.C. and millions of people who have lived A.D.) If God loves the world (John 3:16) and wants everyone to be saved (2Tim. 2:3-4, Ezek. 33:11), then He must provide an opportunity. God’s just judgment is illustrated by Jesus in the Parable of the Talents (Matt. 25:14-29), which indicates that God will judge souls on the basis of the truth (Word = Christ per John 1:1f.) they have received.

There are two main ways God/Christ is encountered:

1. General revelation, which includes meditating on the natural world or God’s supernatural work and moral conscience. Paul said men are without excuse, both because God’s eternal power and divine nature (love) are manifested by creation (Rom. 1:20), and because a proto-gospel has been proclaimed to everyone under heaven implicitly or in pre-NT foreshadowings (Col. 1:23, Rom. 10:13-18, Gal. 3:8). He also taught that all normal humans have an inner conscience or “common” sense (Rom. 2:14-16), which manifests morality or a moral Authority in every culture.

2. Special revelation (1Pet. 1:8-12), which refers mainly to divinely inspired NT teaching regarding God’s history of salvation. Again, the Parable of the Talents indicates that souls are saved via faith in God/ Christ as revealed (cf. 1Cor. 10:1-5). Truthseekers around the world in all times are pilgrims at various places along the road of life, and all true roads eventually lead to the Way to eternal life in heaven (John 14:6, Acts 24:14, Phil. 2:10-11). All truth leads to One Way.

because Jesus is God in the form of man. believing in God, Jesus & the Holy Spirit gets you to heaven. Romans 10:9- "that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth & shalt believe in thine heart that God has raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved". but there's more to it. no one can just say, "i believe in Jesus". you have to be thinking, speaking & acting Jesus. be transformed as Romans 12:2 teaches- "but be ye transformed by the RENEWING of your mind". you must be doing the work God has given you: Phillipians 2:13- "for it is God WHICH WORKETH IN YOU BOTH TO WILL & TO DO OF HIS GOOD PLEASURE"! . James 1:22,23,24. especially 1:22- "but be ye DOERS of the word & NOT HEARERS ONLY"! James 1:25- ".....he being not a forgetful hearer but a DOER.....".

Re: Why do you have to believe in Jesus to be saved?

You mean like: Why do we have to believe in Jesus to be a Christian?

Well; card-carrying Christians pretty much have to believe in the purpose of
Jesus' crucifixion, along with the recovery of his corpse from death, as
adequate protection for folks on track for the sum of all fears; I mean: it's
their religion and it's what defines them as a people unified with Christ.

But I wouldn't lay that on Muslims and Hindus because their religions are
different.

God requires a sacrifice for sin.
Without knowing how mature your 14 yr old is in bible knowledge or understanding it's hard to give you a answer.
Jesus is the only way to salvation he's the giver of life.
Does he or she believe in God? Was this just out of curiosity? What prompted the question?

I'm not even sure why people are trying to make "Salvation" any harder / easier than what I have mentioned above. Everything I have mentioned even matches Scripture. The only thing is people have to physically act upon the teachings of Jesus and physically give to the poor and needy! For anyone who is skeptical on anything or any part I have mentioned above please consult a KJV Bible (or internet) and check any or all the information I have mentioned. Everything is actually pretty straight forward and pretty easy to understand!

Because its the only way to be saved. The only way to be reconciled to the Father, thru the sacrifice of His son and His shed blood on the cross.

Without Him, there is no connection with the Almighty, and we will be dead in our sins, disconnected from the one who created us.

Jesus was given the role as moderator between the Father and those here on earth, therefore whatever Jesus said people must do to get to the Father is the "only" way....

"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on them."

John 3:36

However, there is another option and that option is to "Repent." Unfortunately, those who "Repent" will still likely have to go through judgment day due to zero sacrifice on that individual's behalf....!

Ask a question back. "Do you know for sure that God loves you and has forgiven all your sins?"

The gospel comprises historical facts about Jesus that assure us that God truly loves us and our sins are truly forgiven. You can't get that assurance any other way.

Jesus was deemed moderator between those here on earth and the Father.

Therefor "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on them" (John 3:36)

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)

21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. (Mathew 19:21~23)

James 2:17 Faith without action is useless,

So what everything comes down to is getting to the Father b/c if on is able to get to the Father then one will have eternal life....

The only way to get to the Father is through Jesus (moderator between those here on earth and the Father)

Now if we look at the word "believe" > If one has an appoint with their doctor and the doctor prescribes medicine and a daily exercise regiment to follow in order for the patient to get better, then one must "believe" and follow the doctor's advice. This also applies with what Jesus said and James 2:17.

In other words, one has to physically act upon Scripture and physically help the poor and needy in order to get to the Father (If one continues to help the poor and needy until they are financially hurting, the Father at this point will reveal Himself > or His presence as God is spirit and not human). If a person can get to this stage then one has their foot in the gates of Heaven and eternal life!

That is why Jesus's death was both a physical and symbolic sacrifice! Jesus death and sacrifice means that all people are required to sacrifice for their fellow man and the poor and needy in order to get to the Father....!

The reason why a person is required to sacrifice most of what they own both monetary and material wise is Satan was given dominion over the physical world before being cast out of Heaven. Therefore those who thirst and lust for the things of the physical world their soul will end up becoming to Satan's property and be destined for eternity in Hell and vice versa for those who end up in Heaven with God!
> Those who follow Scripture, God, and the teachings of Jesus (may) make it through the gates of Heaven but only if that person is able to get to the Father before their physical body expires here on earth!

The only other option is to Repent....!

Decide for yourself.....!

The key is that since God is the Creator and Owner of everything, everything that one sacrifices to the poor and needy can and will be replaced by God 20X and more however, be prepared to go ALL IN b/c God will expect no less as both eternity in Heaven is on the line and the knowledge that God is 100% real is on the line as well. Why is knowing God's presence so important? Once God reveals Himself then one becomes fully aware that absolutely everything is the result of God, including the existence of that person themselves!
