You should check out God's covenant with Israel, to which they agreed. It was the covenant of law, not grace. So God simply executed the terms of His covenant.

God's discipline is because He loves his people, not because He hates them. God takes no delight in the death of the wicked. To gloat over the sufferings of people shows an ugly and self righteous disposition. Remember too that you will be judged according to your judgements.
