. What do you think of your options in AR for an all around Lightweight hunting platform? Do you have a favorite?
The only one I've tried is the 6.5 Grendel. I like it pretty well. As with most 6.5's, its bullets usually have a pretty high ballistic coefficient,
along with better sectional density, which means they will get better penetration on game. The 6.8 SPC is probably slightly better than the Grendel.
The heavier bullet loads in the 5.56 also have better BC's, so better penetration, but as with most things in hunting, bigger is usually better. So, given the same BC in a given caliber, the larger diameter ones will give better terminal results.

The old saying "a good big man beats a good little man every time"..... is true in firearms

If you wanted to hunt bigger game, you could go with the "big boys" like the 458 Socom or the 50 Beowulf, but they are generally limited to closer range. I'm sure they would be good out to at least 100 yds though.

If I was going to set up an AR specifically for hunting deer and hogs, I would very likely choose the .350 Legend.... reading up on its ballistics, it's almost perfect for those game animals... bigger, heavier bullet with pretty impressive ballistics out of an AR platform.

There are others in the same category, like the .360 Buckhammer, or the newer .400 Legend, but I've read some pretty interesting stuff about the .350 in some of the online forums.

Thanks, I'm not familiar with the legend or the big ones.
I read up on the pros/ cons of those short chamber 6.5x6.8 rounds. It's pretty interesting. Grendel for greater range and 6.8 for heavier options out to it's effective range was my take away from the articles. Nice thing is that they probably both can handle most NA game from a lightweight SA m4 design. From what I heard, it sounds like you picked the best with the 6.5 G for reloading and accuracy potential. I've read that it will drop WT deer and mulies no problem. I saw a Pewview video of the Beowolf(?) .400 caliber. Very powerful closer range . Maybe those big heavy calibers have a use for big bears and forested moose hunts perhaps?
The owner of Buffalo Bore is the most prolific modern big game hunter I know of. Sure there's plenty of others.
If you haven't seen his channel, I'll give a link. He's a wealth of information for hunters too IMHO.

Thanks for your vast experienced opinion.

Yes, I've seen a few of his videos. He makes good ammo....

As something of an update, I just saw that the military is moving to a new cartridge, and a whole new "theology" for battle. They apparently have decided that the 5.56 is just not enough cartridge for what the troops are facing now. The old "spray and pray" practice, beginning in Viet Nam is no longer effective. The military is going to preach one shot stopping, and this cartridge should do that.

The new cartridge is the 6.8 X 51.... same case length as the .308/7.62 X 51, but a .277 diameter projectile. It is about 140gr or so, and is based around a two piece case.... a steel head with a brass body. This is to contain the 80,000 psi chamber pressure this cartridge generates. The ballistics are better than the .308, with slightly less recoil.

The rifle will be a new design, not a Stoner. It looks like a Sig to me, which would make sense, because the civilian version of this round is already out, called the .277 Fury.

Interesting times....

That's what I thought too when I saw a short video of the rifle, A Sig.
That's a lot of pressure. Never heard of a two piece case. Sounds interesting. That's a lot of changes in the military, especially when they are talking about transitioning to robots and drones.
Makes me wonder what caliber will take out a slaughterbot.

Not a lot of warm fuzzy feeling for a subject in a communist country.
Praying the communiust party collapse in China and the Gospel to come forth.
