. What do you think of your options in AR for an all around Lightweight hunting platform? Do you have a favorite?
along with better sectional density, which means they will get better penetration on game. The 6.8 SPC is probably slightly better than the Grendel.
The heavier bullet loads in the 5.56 also have better BC's, so better penetration, but as with most things in hunting, bigger is usually better. So, given the same BC in a given caliber, the larger diameter ones will give better terminal results.
The old saying "a good big man beats a good little man every time"..... is true in firearms
If you wanted to hunt bigger game, you could go with the "big boys" like the 458 Socom or the 50 Beowulf, but they are generally limited to closer range. I'm sure they would be good out to at least 100 yds though.
If I was going to set up an AR specifically for hunting deer and hogs, I would very likely choose the .350 Legend.... reading up on its ballistics, it's almost perfect for those game animals... bigger, heavier bullet with pretty impressive ballistics out of an AR platform.
There are others in the same category, like the .360 Buckhammer, or the newer .400 Legend, but I've read some pretty interesting stuff about the .350 in some of the online forums.
